Bay FC has appointed Emma Coates as their new head coach, bringing experience from the England U-23 team.
Bay FC, a team in the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL), has announced that Emma Coates will be their new head coach. Coates previously managed the England U-23 team and is known for her strong coaching skills.
During her time with the England Football Association, Coates worked closely with the senior team’s manager, Sarina Wiegman. Under her leadership, the U-23 team had a successful run, remaining unbeaten in their European league campaign. Many players from her team have moved up to the senior squad.
Coates expressed her excitement about joining Bay FC, stating that the club shares her values of people, performance, and culture. She looks forward to working with the players and connecting with fans at PayPal Park.
Coates takes over from Albertin Montoya, who is stepping down after the 2025 season. Alongside her, Gemma Davies will also join the coaching staff. Both coaches have experience in developing players for high-level competition.
Bay FC was one of two teams to join the league in 2023. In their first season, they finished seventh and made it to the playoffs. However, they ended the 2025 season in 13th place, tied on points with the last-place team.
Kay Cossington, CEO of Bay Collective, praised Coates for her coaching abilities and her understanding of women's football. She believes Coates will create an environment where players can thrive.
Coates and Davies were part of the coaching team for the England women's national team, which won the UEFA Women's Euro in 2022 and 2025 and reached the World Cup Final in 2023. The FA has acknowledged their contributions and is now looking for replacements for their previous roles.
