The Portland Thorns have decided to end their partnership with head coach Rob Gale following his first full season. The team showed promise but faced several challenges throughout the year.
The Portland Thorns have officially fired head coach Rob Gale after one full season in charge. Gale had initially taken over as interim coach in early 2024 before being appointed permanently in April 2024. The club made this decision as they prepare for the next phase of their development.
During Gale's tenure, the Thorns finished third in the league with a record of 11 wins, 7 draws, and 8 losses, accumulating 40 points. The team advanced to the semifinals of the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) playoffs, defeating the San Diego Wave in the quarterfinals but ultimately losing to the Washington Spirit.
The season was difficult due to injuries and player absences. Three key players suffered serious knee injuries during preseason, which affected team depth. Additionally, star forward Sophia Wilson was on maternity leave for the entire season, limiting offensive options.
Following the semifinal loss on November 15, team captain Sam Coffey expressed pride in the team's efforts but highlighted the need for greater consistency in future performances. She emphasized the importance of showing up every day and improving to reach the team's full potential.
